Investor demo vs MVP: choose the right first step
Founders often ask for “an MVP” when they actually need an investor demo: something a stakeholder can click in a meeting. Those are different products with different cost, risk, and timelines. Mixing them is how projects stall.
What an investor demo is
A guided, interactive prototype of the product story. The main screens work. Data looks real. A visitor can complete the happy path. Auth, edge cases, and every admin tool are optional.
Success looks like this: someone who was not in your head understands the product in a few minutes and can imagine paying for or funding the next step.
What an MVP is
Software a real user can come back to. Accounts, persisted data, the core job, basic operations, and a way to see what happened (even simple analytics). It is still small. It is not the full platform.
Success looks like this: a first cohort can finish the job without you sitting next to them, and you learn what to build next from usage, not opinions.
How we keep them separate
Two written scopes. The demo can later be thrown away or hardened; that decision is explicit. The MVP does not inherit every demo flourish if it does not serve the core job.
A founder in Switzerland recently needed stakeholders to try the product before funding a full build. We delivered the interactive demo first and treated the MVP as a later project. That is the pattern we recommend when the raise or the yes/no still depends on seeing the idea.
FAQ
- Can the demo become the MVP?
- Sometimes, if the stack and data model were chosen for that. Sometimes it is cheaper to rebuild the core cleanly. We say which path we are on before we start.
- Will investors know it is a demo?
- You should say what is real. A good demo still beats slides. Honesty about the next milestone is part of the product story.
- Which should I buy if I am not raising?
- If you have users waiting, buy a tight MVP. If you still need to see the idea yourself or show partners, start with the demo.
- How do I brief LaraTech?
- Tell us who will click it next (investor, customer, or you) and what must work. We propose demo, MVP, or a sequence, with a written plan.
